Endoscopic Discectomy (Microdiscectomy)

Endoscopic Discectomy: A modern way for Slipped disc treatment

The endoscopic discectomy is a modern procedure which is used to treat the slipped disc. Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive endoscopic surgery that allows direct visualization of the disc. Usually, doctors use this procedure for decompressing nerve roots which get damaged by compressed spinal discs. It is useful for patients with herniated or compressed lumbar discs.

Benefits associated with endoscopic microdiscectomy

● Comparatively less trauma to muscles and soft tissue
● The recovery time is less compared to traditional open surgery.
● Minimal pain
● Immediate pain relief
● Fewer complications and risks
● In the endoscopic discectomy, only a small incision is made just to enter the camera.
● Minimal scar tissues mean that you will be able to get back to your normal routine in just a few weeks.
● In the case of endoscopic discectomy, the success rate is quite high with no repetition of the disease.
● The best part of this procedure is that here you will not have to search for blood donors with no or minimal blood loss.
● The complete procedure is done under visual endoscopic control.
● No hardware placement.

The procedure

In endoscopic microdiscectomy, a small incision around or less than 1 cm is done. Under the guidance of an x-ray, a series of muscle dilators are used to scratch the soft tissues instead of cutting muscles and create a path for the endoscope. In this procedure, special instruments are also used to shave down the arthritic bone.

Why is it used?

In the traditional open surgery, several muscles, ligaments and bones get damaged to treat the specific area. But in the case of endoscopic surgery, we use an endoscopic small camera to magnify the area. Due to this reason nowadays several patients prefer microdiscectomy over traditional surgery for quick recovery and minimum damage to their body.
